Stop smoking for good this Stoptober, UK

The national campaign to help people quit smoking starts next week. Stoptober 2017 challenged people to stop lighting up for 28 days during October.

Evidence shows that people who make it to 28 days smoke free are far more likely to kick the habit for good.

In Essex, the local stop smoking service, provided by Provide, has more ways than ever to support anyone who wants to quit smoking for good. Stop smoking advisors offer support at one-to-one sessions, via telephone support or via a stop smoking app. A variety of stop smoking products can be issued if they are needed.

The stop smoking service is e-cig friendly and can support anyone who wishes to use these as an aid to stop smoking.

The Stoptober campaign, which starts on October 1, will feature e-cigarettes in the TV ad and will do more to encourage smokers who are keen to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking.

Professor John Newton, director of health improvement at PHE, said: E-cigarettes are now the most popular way to quit in the country, with half of all those taking part in Stoptober last year using an e-cigarette."

The service is now also working with some vape shops as many people vape and still use tobacco. Employees at the participating vape shops have received training so that they can support people who want to give up smoking.

Some vape shops offer an incentive to those who successfully stop smoking tobacco. This new initiative has been very successful as over 600 people have quit in the last nine months.

Ellen Van Gemmert, who leads the Essex Lifestyle Service said: “Every cigarette causes you real harm and quitting smoking is healthier for you and your family. We will support you all the way on your journey to becoming a non-smoker and can offer practical help that fits in with your lifestyle."
